As the call to speak out against racism and bigotry intensifies, the need to listen intensifies as well. As we continue to understand the reality of our history, educating ourselves in present time is more vital than ever.
The #ShareTheMicNow campaign is a prime example, as it not only educated but also energized so many to get involved. The campaign took place on Wednesday, June 10thand brought together white and black women of influence. The women collaborated on Instagram to “magnify Black women and the important work they’re doing in order to catalyze the change that will only come when we truly hear other’s voices.”
The campaign reached around 300 million people across the world as celebrities banded together to intensify the voices of powerful black females that have been silenced for far too long. Altogether, there were 50 black women that took over 50 white women’s Instagram platforms to expose followers around the world to the influential and dynamic voices, opinions, and stories of black women.
Some of the biggest names that participated in this pivotal campaign were Alex Morgan, Julia Roberts, Kourtney Kardashian and Sophia Bush. They shared their platforms with activists such as Bozoma Saint John, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Ibtihaj Muhammad, and Kahlana Barfield Brown.
The #ShareTheMicNow campaign showed the power of social media as it served as a true platform for change at a time when our country needs it desperately.
Beyond the celebrity backing of the movement, the campaign encourages all woman to participate on their own platforms by promoting the lessons, history, and input of black women everywhere. The #ShareTheMicNow movement will hopefully lead to further education and understanding, long surpassing June 10.
